Catholic Symbols and Their Meaning

Basically every faith has symbols that they place value in. They believe in them. The same is true for Catholicism. We will look at some of these symbols. Most of which you may already be familiar with.

    • The cross is a symbol of sacrifice, hope, and salvation. It is the “Wood of Christ” and reminds us of how Jesus died.
    • The Crucifix a basic cross, but bears the image of Jesus as he was while on the cross. It is the ultimate symbol of sacrifice.
    • Bread and wine are foods and drinks to some, but to others, it is much more. The body of Christ is the bread and wine is his blood.
    • The dove is a symbol of God’s grace and peace. It represents the Holy Spirit.
    • We use Rosary beads to keep count the number of our Hail Mary’s while we contemplate the episode that warranted them.
    • Lilies are considered a symbol of humility or innocence. They can also stand for chastity and purity, which is why we often associate them with Mary.
